Small businesses are going out of business and corporations are going overseas because Washington is taxing their profits. Better NEVER tax a profitable company. Tax the income of those employed by the business or company. It is only logical. Note my opinion way back.
Jimmy Carter I I again suggest you replace your advisors. Your televised speech (4-5-79) confirmed it. Your request for all citizens to contact their congressmen to give you authority to tax oil company "windfall profits" is analogous to the late Iranian elections where the "people" voted for an Islamic government. Do we still have a choice? If so, May I suggest
1, Remove all taxes on businesses - tax incomes!
2, Require all oil companies to keep their profits in energy field investments.

So the people with the high incomes will move instead of the company. Great plan.

In plain sight but invisible. Well said! But we know the "high incomes" will not move. They will be taxed at the same rate as others shareing the profits of the company And the Employees? They may still hold onto their jobs.

Or we could just implement the Fair Tax and get rid of all the complex tax tables and punitive taxes.

You do realize you would end up paying more taxes right?

Totally spot on.

You don't ever manage to tax the super rich or those savvy enough to know how to avoid taxes.
This is one reason sensible governments don't have punitive tax regimes. It might look like they are letting off the hook with easier taxation on the biggest earners, but it's because they full well know it's best to get at least SOME revenue out of them

It might be popularist to say "tax the buggers", but it just doesn't work in reality.

Actually I'm all for aggressively going after the super rich S.O.B.s for every penny they owe!

Your right Shino. Every penny they owe. I do not believe they should pay MORE. All people have chances to become successful and make more money.
I think the fair tax is the way to go. You spend money, you pay taxes, you make money, no taxes. Poor people spend less, so they will pay less

Sure, there are some super rich that avoid taxes (and it seems like many of Obama's cabinet picks have had tax troubles). The are middle class folk that avoid taxes too. Overall though, the top 5% of wage earners pay over 50% of the total income tax the IRS receives. The bottom 50% of wage earners pay less than 5% of the total.

Would there be enough taxes collected if there were only taxes charged at point of sale, with basic necessities like groceries, housing (except second homes) and utilities tax-free?

People who pay withholding taxes can not avoid being taxed.
That is the realm of the wealthy, who take advantage of all of the available deductions and exemptions, those who have tax attorneys on retainer. The working class has always paid at a higher rate than people using the loopholes supplied by their cronies in congress!
Tax the wealthy, the corporations and the churches including televangelists!
