...Milky Way to crash with the Andromeda Galaxy...in 4 billion years.

Astronomers have long known that the Milky Way and Andromeda, which is also known as M31, are barrelling toward one another at a speed of about 250,000 mph (400,000 kph). They have also long suspected that the two galaxies may slam into each other billions of years down the road. [Milky Way Slams Into Andromeda (Artist Images [duh])

There is a lot of space between stars and the two galaxies will probably pass through eachother without much damage. Nevertheless, I am buying a helmet just to be on the safe side.

Not much we would be able to do about something like that but it's interesting to know nonetheless.

In 4 billion years I highly doubt Wall Street will still exist.

Yes, read the article. It's only talks about conditions out here on the fringe. What if Andromeda's galactic center comes through this neck of the woods--or the two centers collide?

It boggles the mind to try to imagine what our descendants will be like. One thing I feel sure of, there will still be good and evil.

Absolutely!!! I just hope I can sleep tonight.

i vote we fight hard to keep any new galaxy joining us to change their name and conform to our milky ways ways.

The merger poses no real danger of destroying Earth or our solar system, researchers said. The stretches of empty space separating the stars in the two galaxies will remain vast, making any collisions or serious perturbations unlikely.

We will just have to wait and see.

Well, they mentioned calling the combined mess Milkomeda. And Andromeda IS twice as big so....

Out on the fringes like we are, yes, but not so much the cores. And what about the probable black holes in the centers.

Imagine being awestruck for billions of years. But as it points out, the Sun won't be around for the whole thing, bloating to a red giant in another 5 bil or so.

BTW, those illustrations look like they're suggesting some pretty serious perturbations to me.

But we are talking Quazar potent stuff. Both galaxies have black hole in the centre of them, and the black holes suck into each other dark mass along with billions of stars.

Of course the galaxies may have collided with each other some time in the past, and we are just coming to realization now that billions of years in the past inside all of this mess is being projected again.

(Black holes gone wild)

As I understand it the two galactic centers are black holes and black holes have a great deal of gravity so if they came into close enough proximity they could combine into a super black hole that would suck in both galaxies making it a Super Duper black hole that wander the universe gobbling up galaxies until all of the matter in the universe was in condensed into a single supper super duper singularity that would explode with a bank and create an new universe.
