Why is it that they only seem to employ jerks in shops that sell musical instruments (especially guitar, ba** and drum shops)? They patronise you and generally have an air of superiority that grates. And you can never just browse without getting hassled? Anyone else have a view on this?

i know just what you mean
i think it makes them think like they've become some devine dispenser of music once they open a shop.

....you're stuck in this store because your band failed.

Oh man. I was in a music shop about two years ago trying to get some strings for my dobro. I tried to ask the dude for help, and he bit my head off for calling it a dobro because it wasn't the Dobro brand. I was at another music shop, and got the privelege of dealing with Mr. Stuck-up bluegrasser trying to tell me how to play. Go away!

I've never had this problem. I'm in a small town, and the owner of the small music shop here seems to appreciate that I probably have a greater musical knowledge than him despite being half his age. After a few joking comments when I was buying large numbers of reeds, he got it real quick. I might be young but I take music seriously.

When I've had to go in to the city for the larger music shops, they soon learn their place. I may be only 5' and dress like I'm 7, but when I ask for 7th grade AMEB books, don't lead me to 2nd grade tv themes or popular music. One guy there was trying to demonstrate how to play a song, I managed to correct about 20 things he did (chromatic fingering, incorrect diatonic fingering so flat tone, trilling to the wrong note etc). Now when I ask for exam music, they get the point and show where it is. Would be nice if they'd stop rearranging so I didn't need their help.

It seems to come with with more and more shopping experiences in many stores these days. I remember one time I went into a store and the dude treated me like a moron...until I asked him a question he didn't have an answer to.

He shrunk real fast.
