Would you break a civil law if you believed that the civil law was immoral?

Slavery was the law

Many believed that slavery was immoral

There was a fugitive slave law: anyone who knew of a runaway slave was obligated to return that slave to the rightful law abiding owner.

Abolitionists, who believed that slavery was immoral, would committed the crime of helping slaves escape.

Apartheid was the law. Mandela believed that apartheid (segregation) and discrimination were immoral and broke, broke the law, and spent 20 years in jail.

Hiding Jews from the Nazis was a crime. Some people hid Jews from the law abiding Nazis.

I think it is called "civil disobedience." Well, it is risky. And the legal consequences could be very painful. So it would have to be something really important. I have a hard time thinking of any thing that I would do that for. For me I would work within the system. The most famous example I can think of was Rosa Parks on December 1, 1955. In Montgomery Alabama on that day she sat on a public bus in the wrong seat. That single act of civil disobedience changed America(USA). Some times the letter of a law and the spirit or intent of a law can be very different.

Ask Rosa Parks or Gandhi personally I have never had to make that choice, and for that I am thankful, but I would LIKE to say I would break it to act fairly, but would you really? you will only know when you have to make that choice.
