Those who say the Government do not control the media, are in denial.

The real facts about Burma have been controlled by the Government. The Burmese media dare not release the real facts about Burma or they would be strung up and allowed to be fed off by hungry pigs. The Karen people have suffered, yet others would have the world believe that the Karen people caused the war in Burma.

To a war of a different kind that yet another government have been able to block the truth from getting out. That of the 4 year old child still held against the will of his father in a welfare facility for the last year and a half, and the child's own western government's employees have been found out to have had a hand in a conspiracy which resulted in several incidents one of which caused the family to be ripped apart at the hands of a diplomat. Where's the media now?

Court findings, tribunal findings, court orders to recover the child, all visible and current in favor of the child and his father, yet the government representative abroad continues his vendatta of hate and personal anger towards the father and his family, causing sufference to the child.

The government organisation has just recently been found liable for administrative deficiencies, legal error and other wrongful actions towards the children and the father, yet even now as the organisation admits it's learnt from it's mistakes, it remains in fault and continues to slander, degrade, conspire and cause sufference to the family and has yet to appologise to the family for it's staff's foolish behaviour. Where's the media now?

Truly a sad situation.

Where's the media now? gagged!

You see, I knew all about the situation in Burma, because I watched Dispatches. If the government controls the media, then how did I access that information? Because the government doesn't. We have a free media, which can be bloody awful sometimes but it's better than the alternative.

The "media" are one of the strongest influences in any culture. They have the wherewithal to reah (reah?) - reach a large part of any population and they can put their own viewpoint and cast it as the view of the population.
I have never been involved in a poll in my life! Where do they get their figurews from.
Does everyone hate me? (Re:Introductory forum)

When Tim Berners-Lee and Robert Cailliau created the World Wide Web it was seen as a tool for the empowerment of the individual, allowing everyone that's got internet capability unprecedented two way access to the news. Not only could they read it, they could also produce and disseminate it. News and TV companies have been quick to pick up on this "street reporter" phenomenon and it is estimated that 17% of National and 25% local/regional news in tbe UK is supplemented by public input.

This is anathema for the controlling "Powers That Be". Even within our democracies..!

As Treebee points out it is the priority of every Government to maintaim contol of the production, disemination and presentation of the news to their respective populations. In countries such as ours, where the ARMED police state is not {yet} an option, this is THE major tool in the administrational armoury.

In the UK the TV, radio and press are pretty much sewn up. The beef now is with the World Wide Web. I could be texting you all from Iraq right now telling you that things that could be embarrassing for the MOD, the Home Office etc et al and uploading video streams as irrefutable proof. These would, of course have been turmed down by TV and press as being "not in the public interest", "compromising national security" or even "contravening anti-terrorist legislation"

The "controls" for the web have already been put in place via blocking technology. Some from ISPs and others from browser and search engine providers. What Google can do for China {all of Treebees' list is blocked to Chinese web users courtesy of Google/AOL} they can do for us.

There are now calls for controls to be placed on "self policing" sites such as You Tube and undoubtedly TFS through such organisations that seem concerned for our moral welfare. Such bodies, upon scrutiny seem invariably to have some form of political affiliation of some sort or another. Between the UK, Central Europe, Australia and the Americas the Web is the current battleground for The Truth, The Whole Truth and Everything Else Along With The Truth.

It is fast becoming a tool for the control of the masses in the same way that radio and television media is now.

i have only just begun to realize the secular-progressive movement, which interrelates with the media. it is quite frightening what they attempting to do.
they have taken prayer from schools, the pledge of allegiance, tried to take the 'christ' from christmas, and they are trying to legalize gay marriage. only to name a few. wtf is this world coming to?
the media is to blame for numerous things with their scenarios, what-if's, and downright lies to the public. the sad part is is that most of the public takes it as truth.

Al Jazeera is often a fairly good source of information (and no, I am not a Muslim, nor am I a sympathsier with radical Islam - not even slightly)...

Also, it is true that media acts as a propaganda tool, however, reading mainstream media critically can help weed out some of the propaganda. I fear the mainstream media/political calls to control internet access - apparently there is something to that effect happening in Canada at the moment.

if they could contro what goes on the internet and 'clean it up', it should begin with the readily available porn and crimes against children! deplorable, disgusting and disturbing.

Well, I agree, but the problem is the difference between, say, a regular site (media sites, forums like this etc), and child porn. I'll explain...

Recently there was a major child porn bust that caught around 1000 people in Australia, including teachers (which is why it grabbed my attention, I am a teacher and hate that there are still sicko's in this profession. There was quite a few of them when I was a student a couple decades ago, and sadly it seems, not much has changed). Now, these people got busted because they accessed child porn images that had been placed on a reputable site (a business site). Someone hacked in and put the images there, and within a couple of hours, 1000 people from Australia had accessed it - how? I have no idea. But, blocking that kind of thing from happening is next to impossible.

Blocking access to mainstream sites, say, Al Jazeera or such, is much easier to do - China, with the help of Google, do it all the time. So, castrating the internet as an effective form of information is relatively easy, but limiting the true evils like child porn etc., is much harder to do.

Cheers, btf.

It is becoming increasingly hard to get facts when watching News reports or reading Newspapers. We know there is political bias in the media, but they really shouldn't cloud the issue with opinion masquerading as fact.

taken as a whole, the only hole in my thinking, is wholly the holy part.
