I know this has been done a lot before, but bare with me. I was just reading a book called The Maya End Times: A Spiritual Adventure and I came up to this paragraph:

Quote:
Some writers on this subject have predicted dire circumstances will occur in 2012-leading disaster of enormous, global proportions. But none of the Maya, or others whose prophecies are mentioned later (in the book) have actually predicted disaster as an inevitability - though they do say that it is a possibility. Gloom-and-doom predictions are mostly the work of Westerners, adding their own interpretations. Present-day Maya people who follow traditional counts of time do know, without any doubt, that a date in their calendars equivalent to our year 2012 marks the end of a Great Age and the beginning of a new one. They repeatedly say that the rest is up to us, and the future is not set in stone.

So, what do you reckon? Do you think it's all paranoia, just like this book says or do you believe something will happen?

Well, according to the mayans, the end of their calendar marked a new beginning like your book said..I think that other people made it into an "End of the World" type thing, which sparked the whole "We're all gonna die in 2012"

Maybe something in 2012 is invented that does away with everything we need.. or... Lost is finally put to rest and we can have our lives back.

I'm 19 and I've lived through so many "End of the World" scares that it's just so hard to take any of them seriously anymore

True..I think that people blew the end of the mayan calendar out of proportion.

That sounds about right. I think the Mayans had great intuition and, of course, their undeniably great astronomy, but I don't believe in such thing as predicting the far far future.
