Is it moral to teach children that there are talking snakes?

Much has been said of late about Jesus schools and other places where strange concepts of religion are taught. This breeds fundamentalism.

Fundamentalism seems to be rather violent and yet as a society of living souls, we sit back and let it continue.

No fundamental wing of a religion is beneficial. Yet most heads of those same religions are not as firm in reigning them in as they should be. Is any publicity good publicity as they say?

I ask the above question as a moral issue.
Is it right to withhold truth or lie to children in maters that will effect their lives in a profound way?

If truth is of value should we not always give it as best we can?

DL

I think this question will be different for each person seeing as how everyone has different morals.

While I fully believe that it is most important to always be honest, I do think at some points in life, a "little white lie" is needed.

it depends what a little lie is. we all talk to our children about father christmas and the tooth fairy. eventually the kids grow out of the magic and know that its not real. and i think the same should be said for religion. the old testament is a book full of stories. talking snakes, noah who lived ot be 600 years old, adam and eve who had 2 sons, one of whom killed the other then went out and brought back an army from the dessert????
i dont disagree with faith schools, but i think we have to draw the line at morals and lying.

Well if we had one then we could use a show and tell scenario. If not , they are going to have enough useless infromation to wade through when they get older. Better to keep it simple for them .... expain how a grasshopper eats or something like that.

Hi, I'm Arakasi.

Indeed, faith is faith, and as such you'll not change it from one individual to another. If someone doesn't like Van Gogh, or ABBA even, you'll not argue them into submission.

I've tried. Worst fusion of music and art ever.*

However, if you are wondering about whether faith schools are either a good or a bad thing, I would say its possibly one of the most alarming trades in the Western world.

You might as well give out scholarships to terrorist camps.

* I never did this by the way, I was making a funny

i have applied for my kids at the Roman Catholic school, because it is the best one in the area for getting excellent results out fo the kids. my kids are not terrorists and although i am not a catholic, my husband is and i feel very strongly that i must defend faith schools. they ahve a role to play in society and an important one at that

Does that role include telling children that snakes can talk?

I see nothing wrong with telling kids that snakes can talk. Childhood is a magical age where anything is real. We try and force reality on children too much. Nothing wrong with broadening the child's imagination. They will grow out of it but they will be left with good memories of when they believed in talking snakes, imaginary friends, fairies, pixies, santa etc. Good old times

And i see nothing wrong with bringing up a child into a faith, as long as when they are older they are given the space to decide for themselves what they believe is the truth.

I went to a catholic school (even though i am not catholic myself, i was brought up to be though). It was a very good school and i got good marks from them. They did value their faith a lot, and did talk about catholicism a lot, but it never really bothered me.

They can tell of talking snakes - so long as they remeber that the snake probably had a lisp.

"Yeth eve, bite the appleth and learn of the withdom"

(and while we are on the subject...which bastard spelled "lisp" with an "s" ?)

Teaching is one thing, teaching "speculation" as the truth is child mind abuse and should be banned and would be by any intelligent life form. Unfortunately, we haven't yet got to that stage.

Childrens fairy tales are actually useful, when they learn literature later on its an excellent way of them to understand metaphors.

The bible is full of metaphors and also we all interpret the stories in our own ways.

Im not big on religion but anything gets a childs mind working and questioning is a good thing IMO.
