Is a pregnant woman a 'mother'?

So many discussions about whether a fetus is a 'baby'... let's leave that aside. Is a pregnant woman a 'mother'?

We've all seen that classic scene in the old movies when the daddy shows up at the hospital late, sees the baby in the incubator, and faints with the cry of 'I'm a father!' But... is that right? If a man's wife gets pregnant, and then gets an abortion, is he still a father?

Well um.. I'd say they are mother and father when they cord is cut.

We usually refer to pregnant women as expecting mothers.

That's a really good question, very clever!! I like to think that you're not a mother until the baby is out.

Yes, they are, from the moment of conception.

So if a couple has IVF and out of 20 chances 10 don't fertilise, 9 do but don't develop past a few cells and one is implanted and carried to term she's a mother of 10?

It is, as soon as they reach a reasonable viable gestation (about 24 weeks, which is also the abortion deadline in the UK) then I think they can be considered a parent because if they go into labour and give birth there is a reasonable chance that the child could survive and go on to live a perfectly normal life.

it's also the point (in the UK at least) that doctors will actively try to protect life.

In movies and real life, I've always heard pregnant women say "I'm going to be a mommy". Personally, I don't think they become parents until the baby is born.

I could argue either way but I don't really think that any of the questions you asked have any relevance to abortion...

There are women with kids already running around that, I would not really call mothers.

On this question I would say not yet, unless he has other kids. What do they say when their first pregnancy miscarries?

Almost anyone can give birth; it takes a special person to be a parent.
