He followed an unpopular president. He received a strong election mandate. He changed the tone in Washington.

He said that Human Rights mattered. That America's image in the world had to be remade.

He would receive a Nobel Peace Prize.

As the end of his presidency's first year drew near, the future looked bright. He had brought change -- change that mattered.

It was 1977. The next year was very bad.

I certainly hope he isn't...Carter had a few bright points, but over four years, he was a dismal failure.

I think Obama is the new Obama.

Before the last national elections, candidate Barack Obama promised to start a war in Pakistan; so for comparisons to President Obama, one might consider Pericles, the Athenian leader who started a war that almost destroyed the nation.

Edit: One might consider Thirteen Rabbit, the Mayan king who started a war and who did destroy the nation.

I think you could easily come up with that many fairly superficial comparisons between any two presidents.

Pericles and President have another thing in common. They were both liberal in the Machiavellian sense of the word, which means they both used other peoples' money to buy votes.

President Obama seems rather thin skinned about criticism. For that and at least one other reason, one might compare him to Othello.

It is too early to tell. If he fails, I would blame it all on media and world pressure. Nobel Peace prize? How can a man do his job knowing he is given such a high honor for something not deserved?

If I were the President, I would go to the ceremony and be polite. I would know that the committee has acted like idiots. Their moronic view of things has become a trend.

President Obama has inexperience and thin skin in common with John Kennedy. Kennedy didn't get much done, just like Obama. Kennedy got into a hissy over something is some newspapers, and he canceled his subscriptions. Obama is having a fight with Fox News.

Better be glad that Kennedy wasn't thin skinned when it came to Nakita Khrushchev. Remember the Cuban Missile Crisis? Handling that took nerves of steel!

That is a good point. President Obama is and John Kennedy was too stupid to recognize their over confidence. Kennedy thought he could talk to the Russians. And Obama thinks he call talk to the Iranians mullahs. The mullahs are phycos. That makes Obama ten times the greater liability.

Talking to the Russians was what backed down the situation and prevented war. Would it have been Reagan or Bush 2 we'd all still be in the fall out shelter!

Obama is smart enough to know that cowboy politics and wack-a-mole terrorist diplomacy will never work. Talking at least opens the door to possibilities.

Kennedy didn't talk to the Russians, and I don't see how you can "know" what Reagan or Bush would've done. Especially considering Reagan played a huge part in ending the Cold War.

It was Kennedy's and his staff's decision to talk to Krushchev directly, and avoid the Politburo. They knew for a fact the Russian politicians wouldn't talk, but the 1st letter from Moscow gave them the idea that Krushchev MIGHT (that might is a key. It was the best option, but it was STILL a gamble).

It should also be pointed out Kennedy didn't just talk. He also blockaded Cuba (another gamble since blockades can be considered acts of war). Perhaps the crisis shows a President should leave ALL options open, or perhaps using both diplomacy AND threats is the best choice. I'm willing to bet it's the 1st conclusion, but I can't ignore the fact it could be the 2nd conclusion.
