My laptop always gets very hot and it's awful, to the point where I can't actually touch the bottom of it

Even if I sit with it on the hard wooden floors, it still gets really, really hot.

My desk is the wrong height for me to be able to put my laptop on it and use it comfortably, but it still gets really hot on my desk.

I'm clueless.

are the fans working properly? probably need new ones or just need cleaning out. you can buy a can of that air stuff from a computer shop to clean them out and see if that fixes or helps the problem. other than that try keeping the laptop on a flat surface and maybe lift it every so often to help it keep cool. i think you can buy these mat things for them too. im not sure what they are or how much theyd be though, ive only read about them.

Fan ducts might be clogged.

Laptops components are packed into a pretty small volume, so maximum air flow is extremely important.
If you're up to the task & have the proper small screwdrivers, some units have fan access covers (look on the back or under a cover) and reach the dinky fan.

a good clean out usually does it .

Take it apart.

There's really no easy way on most laptops. Some have a bottom cover you can pop off and clean out.

What model laptop?

It could be your battery. Maybe trying a different one.
