Idealistically; from the point you work your last day until death
How many years of down time before death should one allow themselves?

I think both NZ and USA consider 65 a good cut off date; assuming most people make it to 80.

There are many of us who have genes that don't see sixty.

My father and his fathers before them kicked it in their late fifties

I'm forty-five years old

Placing this in perspective I've got about fifteen years left.

A friend of mine here, with the same weak DNA, wound up on a sickness benefit.

I asked if he was ever going to try to find good lucrative work that his condition would allow for (ie; a man missing both legs can still write novels) and he admitted he was too old.

My friend was retiring; this stuck with me for awhile as it was the first time that it had dawned on me my real age and not the 'early thirties' I always perceive myself as (not delusion-ally but like forgetting how fat you've gotten if you don't look in mirrors often to see yourself from outside yourself).

How many years should one feel entitled to spending taking one last look around before they feed the roaches?

If you enjoy your work then do work as long as you possibly can
If you do not enjoy your work then find new work.

Always keep in mind that death is imminent

A balance of work, play and study for as long as you can.

If your work is also your play then that is ideal.

If you have about fifteen years (5 to 6 thousand days) left enjoy them. If you have one day left enjoy it.

You don't judge a movie by how long it is you judge it by how good it is.

I had a plan to retire at 50, which I did (though I went back for one year on a special project so really retired at 51).

I now have a small company for profit (not making any to speak of) and a non-profit (small but doing some good work...I think). However, I don't really view these as the same kind of career work...they are much more like fun projects that are businesses. I will do these until they either fail or stop being fun.

Anyway, I think retirement is something the person should "work" on so they can do it when they choose.

As to businesses and government agencies... I think that (with a few exceptions) a mandatory retirement age is not a great idea. If an employee can do his/her job at 50, 60, 70, 80...why keep going?

Of course the answer to that is at least in part economics...the longer a person stays in a job the more costly they are to the company. And, for each person remaining in a job, there is one person out in the workforce who doesn't have that job. So economically... maybe there should be a retirement age....

Earth is an amusement getaway retreat for the 'gods'

We are merely unsuspecting servants & labor building and maintaining the resort.

Now that's a good answer.

Statistics show that those that have little outside interests and work till retirement age.... generally die with 12 months.
That's because they look forward to retiring but when they get there find they have nothing to do.

A welding torch can help construct steel fortresses to protect people but in the hands of stupid apes they only start a massive forest fire

Capitalism is one such tool abused by stupid apes

I don't appreciate this existence where I am dependent on corrupt and broken souls for a comfortable survival rather I serve for an established employer or have my own services which I try to sell

Racial prejudice isn't the only bias that disenfranchises
For example my political stance would be very much likened to
Marx - New Zealand refused to let John Lennon into this country.

When Social Security began, life expectancy was in the 60s.

At any rate, I expect about 15. But I won't be relying on Social Security.

a selfishness has always been in us.
I think humans are removing themselves from working on their humanity because of technology. video games over becoming a good being?
