they normally appear anyway...but its a matter of the sites with the most people clicking the links that appear first, there is no other way to get yours to the top

Yes there is there is something called google adwords, google posts your website at the top of the list and everytime someone clicks the link you pay them so much per click. It usually isn't very much, but worth it.

Without paying>
Start by submitting your site to google.
Google will give you a code to put in the Head of your page.

Then have other sites link to yours. Its a start.
What is your site?

It took me along time to get my site at the top, and it often gets bumped down.

Hope this helps

You don't need to submit your site anywhere for it to get indexed by google. Sign up an account at a free forum, like this one, put a link to your site in your signature. Forum sites get indexed multiple times a day, sometimes every hour because there's constantly new content on forum sites. Your link will get indexed within a few hours as a result automatically. The way to get it up at the top is to have good content that people click on. That means you need to do keyword research to find out the exact phrases people search for most often. Wordtracker.com can tell you that. If your site contains a lot of heavily searched for terms, your site will show up a lot, and get clicked on a lot, and that will make your site get higher in the ranks.

It's not that easy appearing at the top of the search results. Some people actually make a living helping websites improve their ranking.

There is a whole bunch of factors that influence your search rankings. Some of these are:

- keyword relevancy: your page must contain the keywords people will be searching for. Popular keywords are harder to get ranked highly for.
- popularity of your site: how many well ranked and repected sites link through to your site indicates that your site is relevant.
- way your site is built: the behind the scenes coding needs to be Search engine friendly.
- age of website: if your site has been around for a while it will help.

Those are some of the main factors, but as I say, there are literally 100's of things, search engines like Google take into account.
