My fiance and I are having a debate about holland. He says Holland is a province in the Netherlands. I say they're one and the same, or maybe that if Holland is a province it takes up the whole country. So are there any natives here that can clear this up or anyone that can point me to a source? Thanks.

The two provinces of North Holland (main town Amsterdam) and South Holland (mains towns Rotterdam and The Hague, the capital) are a small part of The Netherlands, but they are the historical, economical and political core of the country.
People use to equate Holland with The Netherlands, as they equate America with the United States.

So, being from Ireland, you wouldn't mind to be called English then, ADUB87?
