I loooove gothic architecture. I find it fascinating and just as awe-inspiring as it was intended to be. Considering the time period 12th - 15th Century that it was predominant, it is incredible that these amazing structures were created - far more complex, intricate and symbolic than the plain, angular and impersonal buildings of today.

These are some of my favourites:

Notre Dame:

Chartres:

Beauvais:

Yeah that's one thing I don't like about living in Australia - we just dont have that rich history or culture like europe does.... none of the buildings can compare to the likes of these. If that's one thing I'd like to do in life, it would be to visit these cathedrals in France.

Those are just awesome to me! I just think it is amazing the detail that goes into building them. WOW - thanks for the pics!

Yeah the detail is pretty incredible. Especially considering the technology wasn't as advanced as it is now... funny that the more advanced we get, the more simplistic things have become (architecturally at least). It's a pity that speed of building takes precedence over beauty.

The pictures are great, i'm lucky i live near two fantastic examples of gothic architecture 1. York Minster and 2. Whitby Abbey (where Count Dracula was written).

I agree that gothic architecture is beautiful but it seems wasteful? how could afford to heat the cathedrals and stuff..i mean...look at all the open spaces.

I have always been amazed with this type of work. I always said my dream house would be a castle. Not because of the size but because I think they are so beautiful. I would want central air and heating though, and oh yeah electricity. lol

I don't think gothic architecture is wasteful. If u really want a space in the building of this particular kind, or somewhere around it that has good heating, then build at least one room inside or somewhere near the building in which the ceilings are only 3 meters above the ground and is (obviously) less spacious.

P.S. I'm sorry for being rude.

Lets see if I can remember my Art History.

Nope, not doing so well...lol...

Here is a link to some information on the Gothic Architectural era.

link [en.wikipedia.org]

It is a facinating area of architecture, and it is amazing to me just how many of these structures are still in use today.

Peace
Shannon
