So this morning Google announced a really fancy, b****in turn-by-turn navigation suite that includes street view, voice search, and a bunch of other cool things that will be available free on its mobile platform Android. This will no doubt end up on platforms like the iPhone as well.

Clearly this will cut into the market for standalone Garmin and TomTom GPS units.

So this sets the stage for this staggering graphic:

Funny comment from Gizmodo:

Google is branching out in a field that can bring it down.
I was always taught to stay close to home.
They cannot do this with an operating system, browser, and now into GPS.
Someone needs to de-horn this wishful thinking company.
Next they will start making corn flakes.

No way. Google will own this market. They already own the mapping, search, and mobile app space. This marriage is almost expected. Their nav and search are the best there is.

I read about this this morning. I can't wait till Android 2.0 comes out, I'll be downloading this app first thing that day. This is going to be a serious problem for other GPS Nav systems.
That graph in the OP, what is that of?

Use of those navigation systems, I suspect. But I also wonder if it might not be false

It's a graph of Garmin and Tomtom stock plummeting after Google's announcement.

Will this make other GPS systems obsolete?
