HI,
I am trying to get my old Evesham PC up and running, I have been partially successful but every now and then it freezes.
I formatted and reloaded windows XP which improved it a little but still get freezes for instance it played 2 full films at one time and then crashed 20 minutes into a film at another time, there is nothing consistent about when it freezes.
So far I have gone on the overheating tack ie I put in a HD cooling fan, checked all the obvious heat related items and generally cleaned things up
I thought about changing the video card etc but these are all guesses and expensive, It seems a shame to give up on something that runs so well when it is working so nice but have reached the end of my PC knowledge and would appreciate any advice as to where to try next, below I have listed the basic,s of the PC.........

MB, ASUS A7A266
RAM 256mb DDR2 SDRAM
40GB HD
I added a BENQ DVD RW to the original LG DVD/CDROM

Thats about it, hope someone out there can make some suggestions

have you tried to run all the windows updates? and also all your driver updates?
this is a common problem once you reload windows,
please type back if you have or after you have so we can try some more things good luck

HI,
Thanks for your reply and sorry about the delay, Unfortunately the machine is not connected to the net so I have been finding any new drivers and transferring them via a flash drive, this is a bit slow but I am getting there.
In the meantime I have downloaded a memory tester and have a monitor that came with my MB {Probe}, Having run the machine several times with these monitors running there seems to be no problem Temperatures are 42c and 29c Max and having recorded for some time can see no difference at the time of the freeze it is completely random.
I have been playing DVDS as a test bed and sometimes I can play 2 full films and then again it will crash after 15 minutes, the same applies when I play a windows screensaver although this seems to last a little longer generally.
One suggestion was to check in the bios how much of my RAM is allocated which is my next step, also I have thought about changing my video card as they are quite cheap {AGP] at the moment.
Thats as far as I have gotten at present but any further ideas will be gratefully received,
Regards bazzeruk

My first guess would be power supply.

The only good way to test it is to shove another one in and see how it does.

You said you downloaded a memory tester? RAM would be my second guess.

Download Memtest if you haven't. Boot off the Memtest CD and let it run for an hour or two.
