Four of the Top 10 best-selling artists of 2007 are country, according to year-end figures released by Nielsen SoundScan.
In addition, half of the Top 10 best-selling artists of the 16-year SoundScan era are country performers.
In the ranking of the top-selling artists of last year, The Eagles are ranked at No. 3 with sales of nearly 3.6 million units, followed by No. 4 Carrie Underwood with 3.23 million and Rascal Flatts at No. 5 with about 3.1 million. Tim McGraw was ranked No. 10 with sales of nearly 2.4 million.
Josh Groban's sales of 4.8 million earned him the No. 1 ranking. Middle Tennessee can take partial credit for the No. 2 artist, Hannah Montana (whose sales topped 3.8 million), because her alter ego, Miley Cyrus was raised here.
The artists ranked sixth through ninth are Alicia Keys, Linkin Park, Michael Buble and Daughtry, respectively.
Garth Brooks remains the best-selling artist of the SoundScan era, with sales since 1991 topping 67 million, followed by The Beatles (nearly 56 million), Mariah Carey (49.9 million), Celine Dion (49.7 million) and Metallica (nearly 49 million). George Strait is ranked No. 6 with more than 39 million, Tim McGraw comes in at No. 7 with more than 36 million and Alan Jackson follows with about 35 million. Pink Floyd is ranked ninth with 34 million and Shania Twain comes in No. 10 with 33.5 million.
Shania's Come On Over is the best-selling album of the SoundScan era, with sales of 15.4 million units.
Nielsen's Broadcast Date Systems ranked Carrie's "Before He Cheats" as the sixth-most-played song on the radio of 2007. (Fergie's "Big Girls Don't Cry" was No. 1.)
Seven of the Top 10 artists receiving the most airplay in 2007 were country performers. Rascal Flatts was No. 2 (behind Nickelback), and Kenny Chesney was ranked No. 4. Toby Keith came in fifth, followed by Tim McGraw and George Strait. Carrie Underwood was ranked ninth and Keith Urban landed at No. 10.
Carrie's "Before He Cheats" came in second, behind Beyonce's "Irreplaceable," on the Nielsen BDS list of Top 10 Internet Streamed Songs.
