Filling out application forms that is.

I have no idea what to write, or what will set me apart from other candidates.

Argh

Any ideas? What are employers looking for?

Its the same old thing everywhere, i dont know what an app looks like in the UK but in the states they're all pretty much the same. As for what employers are looking for its hard to say, experience no doubt. I've found it best to just impress them in the interview, I mean when you can see someone's face its not hard to figure out what they want to hear.

Good luck with the job hunting.

clever got me this far then tricky got me in

In all honesty .. I avoid any jobs that require me to fill out an application form at the outset.

To me .. an application form suggests a job where you are just one of many doing exactly the same thing.

It may be that you have to fill one out for the sake of personnel depts records .. but having to fill one out at the application stage ... makes me think CLERK.

Out of sheer curiosity, what job do you have that you didn't have to fill out an application for?

Look at the job description and replicate it in your application.

Very simply. e.g. If it says, "Candidate needs to be able to work alone."

Write on your application, "I am extremely good at using my initiative and acting independently." etc....

By the time it gets to interview, they will already know which candidate they want.

just be truthful and tell them alll your skills. also, try taking a typing test online to see how fast you can type. just lie about your pay..say you get paid more then you do and the new employer will sometimes pay you higher.

just be honest with them and add anything you know you can do that might be helpful in ANY job

Um... Thanks.

I am kind of at the stage of what specific skills can you show relevant to marine geology?

Um.... well - I can analyse sediment samples - and I know about the geology of the Antarctic - what more do you want?

Good advice that! Be truthful, just be honest, but lie about your pay!

I said very simply! lol.

Just adapt the technique to your applications. If you have no relevant skills, it's doubtful you'll get the job!

Not true ... your application, be it application form or CV, gets you the interview ... from there its the one that performs best during the interview who gets the job.

Make your application stand out from the others and you're half way there .. after that its down to you .. whether you are first or last choice based on the applications .. it can all change at the interview stage.

If it was just down to the application form, why would any busy employer bother with interviews?

Yeah.

I have the skills - I just really struggle to express them in that format.

If it was an interview, I would be able to say it. It is just putting it on paper.

Knowing how to do the relevant tests in the lab is always a big plus. Don't look at that as a bad thing. It should put you at the head of the class. List the tests you know how to run. It's always easier to hire a person that's already trained.
