Actually, if you're enthusiastic about it, you can pretty much get the essentials down in four years of high school spanish. That's what one of my friends did. He only had four years of spanish and nothing after that. He even speaks it better than I do

How much difference is there between Spanish in Spain and Spanish in Mexico? I want to learn spanish, but 99% of the Spanish spoken in the US, and California in particular, is Spanish from Mexico...

to be honest you only need to know the spanish from mexico.with it you can pretty much figure out someone speaking spanish from cuba. or elsewhere.
