This iis a question that has been hounding the videogame indutry from it's beginning, and I
doubt it will stop anytime soon. But is it true? Do games like Grand Theft Auto, games of
shooting inocent people (I'm not trying to be biased, that's just what the game is about) and
having sex with hookers, effect the youth who play them? Obviously it will have some effect,
it' impossible for it not to, but I think it efffects people on different levels. First off, it's
bulls**t to say that when a person plays a game like Grand Theft Auto then goes and shoots
up a school that the game is at fault. There is NO way that simply playing a game teaches you
to hate, to pick up a gun, and to kill. None at all, there is something going on, some kind of
imbalance, within that person that was happening long before he picked up that game. Just
my thoughts, what are yours?

if the kid s smart enough to know that its a video game, then i see no problem!

Only if the kid is unhinged enough to think it is ok to shoot someone in the first place.

GTA 4 is age restricted to 18, so at the end of the day the parents shouldn't be lettig their kids have the games until theyre 18.

not ALL games are terrible, and I agree with the 2nd post, its the individuals will power to realize things should be kept in games.
some would say its the parents fault for letting them play, i would agree. i would never let my 13 year old play an 18+ game. thats just ludicris.

I've actually done some research and written a few papers surrounding this issue.

The problem isn't the games themselves. The problem is that there are kids out there who are unable to separate fantasy from reality. The bigger problem is that a lot of people allow children to play games that are NOT age appropriate.

The reason that games are often attacked is that people feel that the games desensitize kids to the suffering of others. If a child or teenager has a good handle on the difference between fantasy and reality, the games aren't going to effect them. But a kid who has trouble separating, or understanding that violence is serious, is going to be effected in negative ways by playing those games.

That's why they've got ratings on those games. The bigger issue is that a lot of kids just don't get the idea that their actions really do impact other people.
