I paid with my debit card in February 2008 to buy a car the sum of £4500, even though the transaction had to be authorised over the phone to date the money has not come out of my account! Am I in the wrong ? should inform someone or should I go on holiday ? Does anyone know where I stand legally. Will I ever be able to claim the money as my own ?

If I contact the bank surely they will just go through their books and find the missing transaction or was it the car dealer who never got the money and its been lost in their accounts.

Either way it's best to get it cleared up. If you spent that money now and the bank caught it later, you'll be in trouble.

Go to the bank and get them to sort it out. If you spend the money on something else, chances are someone will suddenly realise their mistake. . . better to be safe than sorry!

Ok first find out if the dealership got the money. I suspect they did or they would have repo your car by now.
Then close your account and take the money and run.

Some people have all the luck!! Just spotted that the 5000 for my new car i bought last week came out of my account this moring

Personally I'd keep very quiet!! I think it works the same way as taxes in the UK. The bank will have 6 years to take the money so you've got a bit of a wait for your holiday yet!!

Eventually they will audit thier transactions, realise the mistake and withdrawl it, or contact you. You can wait it out, but it seems inevitable. It's up to you though. I would be afraid to taint my good name if they were the one's that had to contact me, instead of just calling them first. But it's your call.

Fvck 'em if they can't take a joke.

LOL 20 months after this happened and your just now asking what to do. Seems like you made the decision a long time ago to keep something that was not yours. Questions, if they took 2500 from your account knowingly by mistake, how would that make you feel and would they contact you to let you know they made the mistake? It's not your money, tell them.

The money could of come out of someone else’s account.
The bank should of already caught this mixup.

This happened to me once.
Someone put eighty grand in my checking account. (I was rich)
I just ignored it, a few month's later it was gone.

Well, you should call the bank in regards to the transaction and have it canceled. It's been a long time since I worked at the bank but if they have not taken the money out of your account and you haven't canceled it, they still can. Which could leave you in deep s*** if you spend it.

And when you get to the point where you know nothing, you will have achieved something- Wisdom
