So, with legislation banning plastic bags going through in certain US states, and EU and Asian countries, I'd say the plastic bag in it's current non-biodegradable incarnation has 10 years at most.

What will you use instead?

I'm not a fan of paper grocery bags, so I bought some cardboard totes which I take to the supermarket with me. I put them in my cart, and load my groceries into them as I go. When I get to the checkout, I just lift out the tote and put it on the conveyer. I then have the cashier put my stuff back into the totes as she's done scanning them (I just make sure I have at least 1 more than I need, to get the ball rolling). It's bloody fantastic! Much less hassle than carrier bags for loading and unloading the car too. Even if bio-degradable plastic bags became standard in all the supermarkets tomorrow, I wouldn't go back to them.

So there you go, I get that warm "saving the world one (less) carrier bag at a time" feeling and my shopping is way less hassle. Seems like a win-win to me!

They should bring out foldable shopping trolleys a bit like push chairs that can fold away in the car, much easier.

in one of our local supermarkets they gave away blue boxes for that purpose and you scan your stuff as you go along and just give the cashier the scanner and pay,obviously somepeople try to get away without paying for things so you get radoml checked where you have to go to another till and empty your boxes for it all to be checked out properly,its a far more econimic and faster way of shopping

We have self scan in most of our supermarkets now, works well, much quicker.
You scan it at the till and put it in the bag, it knows the weight of every item so can tell if you have to much in the bag or not enough, clever really.

i like the shop and go system and i bet there are a few people that get away from paying for some of there shopping,thats why i think its radomly checked,to try and catch them people out and as a warning to other shoppers your shopping cold be checked as well,i hate carrier bags there always spliting on you and usually when you have liquid stuff in them

Most Supermarkets are pushing the fold up canvas bags and tbh you could do a good weeks shop and carry the lot in one bag although it would be pretty heavy.

Some people are going back to the old fasioned shopping trolley If only Gucci and a few others actually produced a chic shopping trolley every celeb would jump on the bandwagon.

It would be nice to go back a few decades to doing the daily shop locally with the old fashioned basket. There are still some old ladies go every day with an old whicker basket. Thats where we lost our community, apart from in villages we have no idea what the name of our local butcher or fishmonger is that is if we even have one.

I have some canvas bags that I use. Unfortunately I forget to take them with me about 50% of the time - I usually remember them at the checkout . . . maybe I'll make my 2 year old responsible for them . . . she never forgets anything . . .
