What will you use instead?
I'm not a fan of paper grocery bags, so I bought some cardboard totes which I take to the supermarket with me. I put them in my cart, and load my groceries into them as I go. When I get to the checkout, I just lift out the tote and put it on the conveyer. I then have the cashier put my stuff back into the totes as she's done scanning them (I just make sure I have at least 1 more than I need, to get the ball rolling). It's bloody fantastic! Much less hassle than carrier bags for loading and unloading the car too. Even if bio-degradable plastic bags became standard in all the supermarkets tomorrow, I wouldn't go back to them.
So there you go, I get that warm "saving the world one (less) carrier bag at a time" feeling and my shopping is way less hassle. Seems like a win-win to me!

You scan it at the till and put it in the bag, it knows the weight of every item so can tell if you have to much in the bag or not enough, clever really.
There is self-scan here as well, but that's different from the Safeway "shop 'n go" where you actually had a hand scanner, and scanned your stuff as you went around. When you were done, you put the scanner back in the rack and it printed a receipt with a bar code (and told you if you needed to be rechecked). You took that to the cashier, they scanned it and you paid. No one but you actually handles anything in your trolley. I loved that system.
