If two 16-year-olds get pregnant, is the father responsible for child support? A.k.a. if everyone's underage, who pays? The dad's parents until he's 18?

I'd like to know if anyone knows for sure: not speculation or I-know-cuz-I-watch-tv.

I have a friend who is 17, and has a child for which he pays support.

He and his girlfriend had a baby when they were both 16. he had to pay maintenance as soon as he was working, but that is UK so it may not be helpful (16 is legal over here).

Was he still in school? What if he couldn't work because of high school?

He left school at 16 and got a job straight after.

If he was out of work and couldn't pay she would get more money from the state to help her.

Oh okay, so if he had stayed in school, the state would pay until he could pay? I wonder how much...

I think they do.

But it works differently here.

Every parent is entitled to child benefit for each child they have regardless of their circumstances. There is also a number of other benefits she could claim.

Indiana uses the welfare system for those who need
help. It doesnt amount to much though. I fathered a child
rather young, but i was out of HS.

i think it all depends on how much time they spend with the kid if they hardly ever see the kid they should pay child support or help out in some way or another and if they with them alot and spend alot of time with them than i dont think child support would be required i mean my brother is a single parent and his daughter lives with her mom and they are really close they do alot of stuff together they go out to eat all the time and go to movies and whenever he is at the store he buys her stuff so in a way thats kinda considered as child support too and he also pays for her daycare too.

Different countries no doubt have different laws. In Aus, yes, he would be financially liable, but only if he was earning money. If he was a non-working full time student, then he would not pay anything, because payment is based on a % of income (although, there is a minimum payment that is expected, which, if he couldn't pay, he could challenge and have removed). Sadly, I know more than i need to know about child support...
