The title says it all, peeps: what books have you been forced to read - because of a class or other impetus - and not enjoyed?

Waaaaaay back in 1th grade English I had to read A Tale of Two Cities and HATED it. I thought it blew goats. Unfortunately, it put me off d***ens for years until I had to read Hard Times in an English class as an adult which I loved. Now I hold the proper reverence for d***ens, but have yet to tackle A Tale of Two Cities again.

In another adult English class I suffered through Middlemarch by George Eliot. It wasn't a horrible book, but crap in a hat was it LONG, and I just couldn't get into it.

What say you all?

I recently had to read The Kite Runner for my literature class. I hated it.

I had to read Spoonface Steinberg for English GCSE, was the most depressing book I've ever read, very boring.

No way! Animal Farm? I LOVE that book.

It's by George Orwell, by the way.....perhaps you can try his 1984?

Animal Farm and 1984 are great books.
(Saying this because you will most likely end up reading 1984.)

Dracula was my least favorite book.
Hate the way the story is told through journals.

I love 1984 but not animal farm. I fell asleep. It killed me to read the whole thing.

Animal Farm is a brilliant book IMO, and 1984 is pretty good too (by the same author).

Animal Farm was awesome. You can even watch the animated movie on YouTube.

I got the book "Dewey" for Christmas last year. Not a good book, IMO, it seemed a little preachy.

The Painted Bird by Jerzy Kosiński - It made me sad and mad and miserable and sick. I even asked my professor if I could stop reading it because I would get so upset. He said no.

Dracula definitely did bog down when the men in the party were making proclamation after proclamation to Mina Harker about their very Victorian fealty to her and her safety......blah, blah, blah.....
