Venom invented thrash metal. For a guy with a Maiden avy you should know that man. Venom were Geordie nutters who picked up guitars, played fast and shouted about satan alot.

Implying in any way whatsoever that Iron Maiden has anything at all to do with "trash metal" is an absolute travesty. Iron Maiden is *miles* away from anything that could possibly be considered thrash metal.

Thrash generally refers to metal with a very high level of aggression, fast tempos, "thrashing" guitars, and generally little to no melody. Typical thrash bands are old Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax, and Pantera.

Death metal is sort of a offshoot of thrash metal. Death metal is invariably very morbid and characterized by louder and heavier, though often slower overpowering guitars and vocals. Death metal is/was less mainstream than trash, and typical bands include Cannibal Corpse, Entombed, Sepultura, and Emporer.

Iron Maiden is squarely from the NWOBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal). This genre originated in the late 70s/early 80s when the current, established British metal bands faded or disappeared. This genre included Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Saxon, and Motorhead, and the music was characterized by strong melodies, blues-influenced riffs, and quality vocals.

Most "real metal" heritage can be traced back to NWOBHM and thrash from the early 80s, but the two genres have completely different histories and influences. They came from two completely different directions. Iron Maiden's music is heavily influenced by classical music and is strongly focused on technical instrument work, soaring vocals with no screaming, and strong melodies, whereas thrash is generally focused on purely speed and aggression and eschews melody or technical composition. There is little to no aggression in Maiden's music
