I just received the following in my work e-mail. I'm sure most folks are diligent about what they install, but I thought I'd pass along the warning from our IT folks.

---------------

The newest virus threat making the rounds on the internet is called Anti Virus 2009. Antivirus 2009 pretends to be an actual antivirus program. It lies to the user that it has detected other viruses on their system and tells the user to use it to remove those threats. Doing as it asks will deactivate your existing anti-virus program and install the virus on your PC. It also uses the following names: XP Antivirus 2008, Vista Antivirus 2008, Ultimate Antivirus 2008 and System Antivirus 2008.

Do not click on any link provided by Antivirus 2009. Once you click on the link provided, you'll be redirected to the Antivirus 2009's website (antivirus2009.com) to download and purchase Antivirus 2009's rogue anti-spyware program. This virus is malicious and when the computer is infected, 95% of the infected computers have to be completely rebuilt and all software reloaded . Reliable anti-spyware / antivirus programs include AVG, McAfee and Symantec. If you do not have one of these installed on your home computer then we strongly encourage you to purchase one.

The firms computers are protected by a layered defense using three different anti-virus programs. Please note, Antivirus 2009 is caught by visiting an infected website but Postini will not stop it as it would stop an email based virus. Also, if you give it permission to run on your computer, our existing anti-virus programs will not stop the infection.

Really? I don't install anything that doesn't come from a site that I trust.

I'm useless when it comes to computer problems! I had a problem with an old computer that it took 8 tech guys 3 days to help me fix. They'd get annoyed and pass me off to somebody else

I only run Kaspersky Internet Suite 2009.. And even that one doesn't catch everything that comes my way.. New Viruses are being made everyday, so I don't think ANY programs will find everything.. F-Secure is used as a backup...

That's not good advice at all.

McAfee isn't very good, and it costs money. There are better, free alternatives to McAfee and you shouldn't scare people by saying they should stay away from any of the excellent alternatives.

I don't think he meant that others should avoid the alternatives, just that he prefers McAfee. I prefer McAfee over Norton b/c Norton causes my computer to crash. And I like it over the free ones because I can actually get an install disk for it. My computer runs too slow to download the free ones.

Our IT's are smart, they've made our computers "whoops" proof by taking all rights away from the users. I couldn't accidentally install something malicious even if i wanted to.
