Neither system is intrinsically superior. There's no reason other than tradition to hold onto a system that's on its way out.

things and terms change all the time...it is just how it is... also the scottish and welsh and irish all have terms that the english dont use...so does it really matter...what makes it british ...

Actually the English language was born from several different dialects of Low German around around A.D. 400...
