PTF![]() Indiana, | #1 Amendment One, North Carolina Gay Marriage Ban, Passes Vote By MARTHA WAGGONER (Huffpost) RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina approved a constitutional amendment Tuesday defining marriage solely as a union between a man and a woman, becoming the latest state to effectively slam the door shut on same-sex marriages... link [www.huffingtonpost.com] --------------------------------------------------------- >> Good Guys strikes back ! Seriously this was expected. As I said in another post about not being alone as many did speak by voting. Sure this is one state but more will have this opportunity to speak out by their votes. <<

| davii I'm Awesome Deleted ![]() London, United Kingdom | #3 Still no mention of why it is only legal for marriage to be man/woman, other than mention of procreation... In which case, men and women that are unable to procreate can never marry etc etc... Tis all bullshine... | ||||||

If banning same-sex marriage is based on religious reasons, how is that fair to those who don't have religious beliefs? Where is the freedom and equality for America's gay citizens?

Where is the freedom and equality for America's gay citizens? So long as there's no official relgious rubber stamp, it's all good apparently...seperation of church n' state n' all that... So, due to reasons of procreation alone: 1) No same sex marriage 2) No marriage containing a person unable to procreate 3) All marriages of persons subsequentially unable to procreate can no longer be considered legal They must have better reasons than that in there somewhere...

Well, the upside of the law is that opposite sex couples who choose to simply live together will no longer have the benefits of "common law marriage".. I'm sure that most of the toothless morons who have been shacking up with their cousin for decades didn't realize that though. And, like all of these amendments, it will be struck down by the courts, and it will cost tax payers millions of dollars in legal fees to defend a law that's defenseless. So... meh.

Was common law marriage reintroduced post independance then? It was done away with in the 1750s and as the US uses English Common Law with Amendments, I'm assuming that was one of them ![]()

| hoppy Banned ![]() , | #12 I don't really see what the big assed fuss is all about. IMO, gays are just making a big fuss about nothing. Gays want to be married, just like straights, so they can enjoy all the same rights. Rights like what? Divorce? Bulls***! Gays adopting children? That should NEVER be allowed. Yeah, gays think they make great parents. More bulls***. All they are making are more confused kids. More kids that grow up thinking the Bible has it all wrong. The next step then is atheism. Gays should be happy they can live as they please and be left alone and not imprisoned for being perverted. | ||||||

It was done away with in the 1750s and as the US uses English Common Law with Amendments, I'm assuming that was one of them It's a states rights issue. The federal government does not determine who may or may not get married.. If they did, people in North Carolina would most probably not be able to marry their first cousins.. But, to your point, most states recognize a (heterosexual) couple as being in a common law marriage if they own property together or have cohabited for an extended period of time. This amendment nullifies that in NC

This amendment nullifies that in NC I understand that it's dealt with by individual states, but was working on it already having been done away with circa 26yrs prior to independance and therefore reintroduced. That said, I'm not versed in how states government worked prior to independance. Most people in the UK still assume common law marriage exists, but like I said, gone for over 250 years. Except in Scotland, where I think it went in 2003 or such recent a year. EDIT: Not to worry, I looked it up. All a bit of a mix prior and then legal subsequent
