I went to an alcoholics anonymous meeting today, as extra credit for my abnormal psych class. I was pretty nervous before going in, I didn't really know what to expect.

But it was a really welcoming environment, and I felt fine after a few minutes. I definitely see the benefits of group therapy after attending today. I mean, I've not had a sip of alcohol in all of my life and I was still able to relate to some of the things the other people there were saying. Kinda shows how we all may feel different and alone, but we're actually very similar and not alone at all. I was actually pretty inspired by the whole experience.

Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous are free and there is a meeting near you 365/24/7. It is totally anonymous, what is said there stays there.

Interesting! I never thougt it could be good idea to go there even if you are not addictive to something. It can be helpful to others!!

Thanks for sharing!

I was married to a recovering alcoholic for many years and I would attend meetings with her. As you say, even though you may not be an addict of any kind, these meetings can be very beneficial because you get to see through the eyes of other people and you find out that you are not alone in most of your feelings about life in general.

my ex husband is an alcoholic and we used to go to the meetings together (i am not an alkie by the way!!) and i used to go to the sister group al anon which is a support group for relative and friends of alcoholics.
i hated it. every minute if it. was not for me at all and not for him either cos he did nothing but drink even more.
it works for some and not for others. the ones it does work for, good on them. but the alkie has to want to stop. until then, no point

Every person has some sort of addiction. What AA tends to do, is replace your need for alcohol with group therapy.... but, mostly with religion.

Am I saying this is bad, not at all. It's better to be addicted to something that is good for you as opposed to a self and socially destructive thing like alcohol.

Personally, I think that AA is great, although, I have never been to a meeting, but there is nothing wrong with it, imo.

This is a great point to. If the person doesn't want the help, then they cannot get the help. It just won't compute in their minds.

Although, I would have to say that if your ex was more willing to get the help, your expirience there would have been better.

12 Step Groups = free therapy. But you have to attend them regularly, which for me has been extremely difficult.

Well, that's your ex though, not AA.

It's shame that you had to put up with that, I would never wish it on anybody, and, until his heart changes, he will never change.

Great advice I got while attempting the Steps:

- You don't have to believe in God. If you want, replace every mention of 'God' with 'the universe' or 'a mechanical horse,' etc. Whatever floats your boat. It's the actions that matter.

- If you're considering the God thing but still remain skeptical, try believing anyways. Who cares if there really is no God as long as the program is working for you and your life is continuing to improve?
