in my english lesson we were tlking about how the english langauge plays a role in gender...i mean, think of swear words related to woman, and ones related to men, u will notice the ones on woman are more insulting and even the ones on men,go thru woman and so on eg "son of a b*****" "B******" ...etc...but its not onli that.....

a brain teaser for u;

A boy is injuried in a car accident with his father. His father is instantly killed. the boy is taken to casualty, but the surgeon takes one look at him and says 'I cant operate. He's my son'

now, if u get this straight away then u are quite clever, but i found the majority, including myself and my "mother", didnt get this....

...the answer...the surgeon is the boys mother, but most ppl assume it to be a man. So is it society, or is it something we have embedded deep into our minds...it is also the way boys/girls are treated from a young age.

The way society was in the past also plays a role in this, obviously...

...personally i think things are changing, my dad is probably more tidy than my mother and i put together, but still expects us to do the cooking a lot of the time...but i do think society roles in gender are slowly changing...

what do u think?

It's social constructs regarding gender and their roles. They're created by society. For example girls wear pink and boys wear blue..those sorts of things

Society shapes how we perceive certain things to be.

i didn't get it right away either
but i think stereotypical gender related roles are becoming less specific and people less biased
(in relation to gender anyway)
language changes as society does.
theres a theory of Simone De Beauvoir, an early feminist
writer that says that men will no longer be able to hold on to a position of superiority in the work place as
men and womens capabilities are equalized by technology,
basically that it dosn't matter how much physically stronger a man is if it's not necessary to perform better physically than a woman.

yeah thats right, there is still subtle stuff like, woman want a man to lean on/to be strong for her...its still in our society somewhat...but i totally agree

I never saw anything wrong with the "old ways". The woman stayed at home taking care of the children, cooked, did housework, etc. I don't think it's demeaning. A woman could take a lot of pride in a family she nurtured. I sometimes wish we could go back to those days. A man treated his wife like a lady and the lady treated her husband like a man.

My fiance and I are talking about children in the near future. I hope to have my income at a level where she can stay at home if she chooses. This day and age it is hard to get by on one income though.

i think a person should be free to do what they choose,
i want more from life than to raise the next generation,
i expect my future spouse would also,
i think it's entirely possible for two people to raise a child together and both have room for their own life goals.
i wouldn't want to limit it to just careers.
i never expect something from a person that i wouldn't be willing to do myself. especially not from someone i love.

Key words being "if she chooses" - and that's the beauty of today. A woman HAS the choice to stay at home or go out and work.

I too agree with there being nothing wrong with staying at home, being the "homemaker" while the man goes out to work. That's been my life since my son was born. And I'm proud of it. I think that women just wanted to have the option to be more than just housewives and mothers as "expected".

I didn't get the brain teaser either... felt kind of embarrassed cuz there it was staring me in the face, lol. SUCH a good teaser to use to prove a point.
