Bloody technology in cars.

My car has been playing up a bit recently, so I took it my local Vauxhall garage this morning for them to look at.

They just rang me up and this is what they've quoted me.

?38 for diagnostics
?120 New Crankshaft
?300 for new Engine Managment System
+VAT!

Granted, the EMS might not be needed if the only problem is the Crankshaft, but ?300. For a computer to tell you that the car isn;t working 100%

FFS, I don't need a computer to tell me the car isn't working

The computer runs the car. The ignition timing, fuel injection, idle speed, transmission (if it's automatic), air bags, cruise control, etc. All of these things are controlled by the engine management system, which gets data from all sorts of places like oxygen sensors, throttle position, etc. It's pretty important and does more than tell you the engine isn't running right

Yeah I know it's important, but like Trillian said, what happened before computers.

oops- let me finish that post, lol.

I can fix a car if it goes wrong. Not difficult at all, but the fact that you have to take the car to the dealer to find out whats wrong is what gets me.

I dunno how it is in the UK, but US automobiles have a standardized connector under the dash which plugs into a little handheld computer. The computer reads the diagnostic codes off the car's onboard computer, and these codes can tell you everything the car knows is not right.

You can buy yourself one of these handheld diagnostic readers for about $100 or stop in any auto parts store and borrow theirs for 2 minutes.

See normally I would have done that - but it was the on board computer that was malfunctioning

You know what'd be easier
if you just blew up your car
or filled it with petrol
and torched it
but anyways
you claim on the insurance
and buy a moped with that money
one with a broken headlight
and drive that round
but paint it green
all the ladies would love you
hell, i would

Things must be different over there.

With the insurance on my car, I think I'd get something better than a moped too

Exactly
You could buy a moped
and with the remaining money
spend it on some hookers or something
a parachute
or a duck
or a box with a triangle in it
