To New York in a few weeks.

Really expensive, big holiday, to a far off destination. Can anyone tell me what it's like, what there is to do there, any recomondations, and is New York the place where Subway sandwhich shops first started?

New York is also a fairly large state, and you could be visiting Buffalo, Albany, the Adirondacks, the Catskills, the Finger Lakes, Lake George, etc.

If you mean New York City, it would behoove you to know that New York City, in the state of New York (which is larger than the whole of England, mind you), is often abbreviated as NYC.

Anyway, here's a typical laundry list of s**t worth seeing in Manhattan, which, although the smallest borough, is the most typical vacation spot:

Empire State Building (go to the top)
The Metropolitan Museum of Art (often called The Met)
The Museum of Modern Art (often called MOMA)
CBGB's (music club with excellent rock.punk/new wave/etc acts - all original music)
Depending on when you come, getting tickets for a Yankees or Rangers game would be in order
Times Square
See a Broadway show (cheapest way: hit the TKTS booth in Times Square early in the morning and get some half price tickets for the matinee of your choice)
WTC site
New York Public Library

Century 21. Right across the street from the WTC site. The sell genuine designer stuff for less ridiculous prices than anywhere else in the city.

There's also an H&M. Very stylish stuff. might be able to put a nice looking suit together there, but don't expect a regular men's shop that has a "suit" section.

You could also try Bloomingdale's and Macy's. They should have tailors on-staff. Macy's definitely will.

Shit, you can't throw a rock in Manhattan without it picking up some cheese and sauce.

Try to get to John's in Times Square. Right in the middle of the action, next to Broadway (Broadway is a street that goes from the southern tip of Manhattan all the way to Canada, passing about 1/4 mile from where I'm sitting right now, but the Broadway Theatre District is the section of Broadway right around Times Square - where Broadway crosses Seventh Ave).
