Time to undermine some opinions: to all of those people who said Ramones, you are actually wrong. The question only has one correct answer and that is the Clash.

They had actual song writing ability for a start and didn't just churn out the same thing time after time. They had the desire to spread their wings and pursue other musical interests, making them an all together more rounded, and if anything, more interesting band. And yeah, they did want commercial success so they could have better lives.. is there actually anything wrong with that?

So just to hammer the point home, to all of you who said Ramones, you get a big fat sticky-out tongue

IMO, its not a question serious fans punk fans can answer one way or another. Both were vitally important to the punk scene. Both groups were competent song writers. And both bands put out damn catchy and energetic songs. Trying to pick one is like a parent trying to pick a favorite child.

The Clash! london calling is one of the best albums ever made, and I like how they werent afraid to try new things. The Ramones are great too but they played the same song for like 20yrs
