Many people do crafts as a hobby, however some do it as a business. I wonder how many people are making a living from their crafts and if so how successfully.

There's a website that sells nothing but people's crafts, kind of like ebay. I forget what it's called though, but it's quite successful.

My wife makes and sells pottery and the last fair she went to sales were way down for all the vendors. These are hard times for almost anything that is not considered a necessity because people have less disposable income now.

Quite a few that I know personally. Though with crafts you will almost never completely get back the labor you put in, just the enough to cover the material cost and some.

Of course this is considering that you haven't turned it into a small business completely.

But many people start out with craft booths to see what the demand is like for their product. Craft booths can be rented out during various events throughout the year. Usually many are hosted by your local town at town festivals, parades and such.

After that...it basically becomes like and ordering business, where people hear of what you make word of mouth, through friends and family. Often times with crafts, there isn't usually a high demand as far as necessity with people. You either have to be located in a good place to do so, which is expensive so it rare or have to partner with someone and make many various products which is hard and can only work if you have the actual space/workshop etc...basically turning it into a small business.

Best thing is to find out what the demand is for your product first.

https://www.theforumsite.com/forum/topic/My-first-basket-lol-I-feel-old-/343580

Lol I sold five of the eleven baskets I made this semester. Its was the first time I have ever taken a basket weaving class...and with four of them, I had to wait to give the baskets to the people I sold it to because I needed my professor to grade them first.

But a lot of time went into them and even though I was able to sell them, for the amount of time that went into them they should be worth over a $100 dollars. Material was nothing with each costing anywhere from 3-10 dollars to make. But who would buy a $100 dollar basket? Not many people. If you honestly want to make crafts for a living, it can't be approached as a hobby. I mean yeah, you may enjoy making them, but your mind set has to be completely different, unless you're just making some for extra side cash.

I went to the county show back in the summer. You should've seen the tat that people were trying to flog in the crafts section. The ability to glue a few sea shells to a piece of wood is not a talent that you should expect people to give you money for.

Tons and tons of web sites are for custom vinyl lettering. I think that a few of the top ones do okay but there's no way that most of them can make enough to use that as their only income.
