When the kids start becoming the parents and parents are now the children?

I'm just sitting here and realizing that I am now the parent. I'm making doctor appointments for my rents, I'm calling my mom and making sure she takes her medicine on time, I pay half of their bills along with mine, I drive them around, take them around town and events when i don't have anything to do, I cook and bake their favorite dishes, I buy them groceries, I clean all the hard things that my mom doesn't have much energy to do. I'm the parent its funny

Though I'm only 21 and my parents are in their late 40's...actually turning 50 next year, and while they are capable of doing a lot for themselves, they are slowing down, especially my mom who forgets little things like turning the stove off after cooking or taking her medicine and its me that steps in and make sure she does it. My dad will be young forever but he works hard and years of physical labor are taking a toll on him.

I think part of it happened when I got older and started taking care of myself. At that point, my mom was no longer just mom or a wife. She started doing her own thing, she become extremely active with her church, constantly doing events, volunteering, public speaking, holding classes etc that it became her number one. And while its cool and all, I just realized that if i have kids, i'll have my parents just as long too!

Sounds like mom's gotten comfy with the idea.

But if that's cool with you, then why not?

Maybe she's enjoying the reversal of roles for a while; especially if you have brothers, and sisters, and she's worked hard for years.. a nice break I think.

My mom always says that I do a great job taking care of her. It's like we both put in the same effort for each other, though she is the one who manages the bills and all.

I kinda feel like I've always been responsible for my father. He can be really immature and doesn't know "how" to act in certain social situations.

My mom on the other hand is still very much independent. I'll do things like drive her places, pick up stuff from the store for her, etc. But she wouldn't forget to take her medicine or anything like that.

Both of them are in their 60s, but my dad's currently living in Europe so I definitely interact with my mom more.

Nah...she's not comfy...shes very busy with her own thing and she puts other stuff as second priority like making sure she's going to the doctor and stuff like that.

My mom is the strongest person I know, while we don't always get along, but after seeing her go through a lot of things and still come out on top, she is such a big role model. My rents deserves my brother and I taking care of them.

Besides I like paying for some of their things, like plane tickets to places she wants to go and stuff. Family is family in the end. I don't mind it, i just find it so funny that its just switched and switched so naturally.

Oh, goodness. That's a scary thought.
My parents are in their seventies and are going well on their own.
So, I'm not going to think about it. . . nope. Moving on.

Yeah, you and your mom sound like a team from all your posts.

Yeah...my moms very independent but she's starting to forget little things, I hope its not Alzheimer as she gets older though.

But I do understand the "being responsible" for parents, i've always felt responsible for my mom. My dad can get along and do things fine but my mom, I always felt like i was responsible for. She did a lot between raising my brother and I, devoting her life to church, and working at the same time. But I felt responsible partly because I was a translator when we moved here. My mom can speak English really well, she does a lot of public speaking and such but sometimes she doesn't know the correct translation of a word from our language to English or certain subjects like medicine she wont know how to describe how she feels to the doctors in english. Also my mom grew up with British English, and for a while she had the hardest time when people would say things like "we need to buy some pants" and she wouldn't know that pants meant trousers or shop meant a car repair shop and not a grocery store.
