The whole straight edge thing came form muscians I think.

Like, a lot of musicians get hardcore into drugs, alcohol, sex and partying. But it's bad for them.
You know how in bars/clubs you get an X on your hand if you are undersage and CANT drink.
There you go. Musicians adopted the symbol as there was a movement in the industry to clean up their act and go to rehab.

Some American clubs do. That is where the "X" came from. Back in the day, if a club served booze then everybody's ID's were checked and underage teens would get a big black "X" on their hand so the bartender would know to not sell them drinks.
