Hah, ya that didn't make sense. I meant I installed a brand new sound card.

If you went to all of that and it didn't say that your sound was disabled, then that wasn't the problem. Try checking the cables, connections and such. If nothing then check the troubleshooting on the website for XP.

is it more likely that my soundcard is just rooted?

I was kicked out of my local library for moving all the bibles to the 'fiction' section.

It should tell you what soundcard you have. It might even tell you were to find a driver for it.

Now I just have to figure out why it would appear that I don't HAVE a soundcard...

If it's saying you have no soundcard then chances are the card is fried.

Was my thoughts from the beginning, as it's in properly and everything.

Oh well. Thought while I was here, might have one last ditch effort at trying to get sound back.
