Right, so I'm re-drafting my CV as I'm going to hand them out to various shops on Monday in the vain hope of actually getting a job. What I'd like to know is whether it's actually worth writing a covering letter as well? If so, should I make it individually suit each shop or just do a generic one and just change the job titles?

A couple of my friends have managed to get jobs recently but haven't written covering letters- so I'm not too sure if it's really worth the effort. Would potential employers think less of you if you weren't to hand in a covering letter with your CV?

Any thoughts?

Not totally sure that it's worth the effort babe. Been there and done that. Half of them wait til you're out the door and then bin it anyways.

I just got a job but I'm still not sure what I did to even get the interview nevermind the actual job. But I went forever without a covering letter and it didn't seem to make a difference. I still got some interviews and ended with a job

Ive applied for jobs in the past and a covering letter was a requirement, it cant hurt to do a generic letter, if nothing else it shows a little more enthusiasum than the others who dont.

Yeah I guess it's worth the effort if anything comes out of it, it's just having to make all the effort only to get it thrown out that makes me think there's no point to it. Still, one must be optimistic about these things I suppose, you never know and all that. I think I may try and write a generic cover letter and see how that works out. Thanks for the advice

I would totally do a cover letter. I'm sure that in most cases it doesn't make a difference, but what if you don't hand one over on the one occasion that it does? Better safe than sorry!

I think each covering letter should be specific to the job/comapny that you are applying to as it will make you stand out and make it look as if you want to work for that specific company! Its more personal and will definately help you out!

I think it really depends on the type of job you are trying to get ... if you're applying to be a waitress or bartender you don't need a cover letter ... if you're applying to be a nurse or administrative assistant or such then you should include a cover letter that is tailored to the specific company you are applying for. Good luck out there!

Don't know if its of any use, but I strolled through Bristol Airport recently and there was a notice for a job. Have checked their website and there's a few more...
