What about a form of scarification where ash is rubbed into the wounds, often the ashes of a deceased person? Opinions?

Just a disclaimer - I'm not asking you guys to actually do my work, I need to collect opinions

Well I would assume this adds some shading to the modification..I dunno I really have no issue with this, personally I don't think I would do it, but I once saw on a fictional show this woman put her guys ashes in her fake breast implants..I laughed!

I think people get the whole self harm and body modification thing muddled up.

Is the ash thing originally tribal?

I think so too, I'm not really for scarification but I think it's interesting which I why I want to write about it.

I think it is, I'm not entirely sure. I'd have to double check. That also brings me on to another point, do we really have the right to regard tribal practises such as scarification as taboo, when many women in our countries are having multiple cosmetic operations?

People have been doing body mods as long as we have been around.. IMO it's a very expressive art form, when I got my brand I was in a lot of emotional pain, in a way it helped me release the pain I was feeling.

So do you think that extreme body modification is a release for those feeling emotional pain?

I think for your everyday mainstream person, that yes it. We are taught to bottle our emotions up, to keep them to ourselves or just go see a therapist..sometimes certain pain is beyond verbal expression.

Taboo as in not our practices, yes. Taboo as in don't let them do it, no. Because their rituals are not ours.
These tribal practices are of their understanding, of their life and tribulations.

Smoking was taken from Natives and used out of ceremony. They didn't smoke a cigarette (or pipe) every hour or two. It was in relaxation, with friends and in simple ceremonies.
Used as everyday, it kills more. Taken and used unwisely.

Things used because some want to be different but are not sure how. It's Cool or Modern, friends are doing it, TV is showing it. It's on the Edge. Older people don't understand -so limiting.
This is brainwashing... This is peer pressure.

But then again, as a right of passage, as symbol of strength. Things don't become ordinary, this would have meaning.

It's just my opinion.

Personally, I think scarification is an art form, since it's done predominantly for the visual/tactile result, the pain is simply a by-product of the process, and unless you're doing it to yourself (where the line between art and self-mutilation could be slightly blurred) it can't really be described as 'self' anything.
