You're an instant god at every language you try?
Also, English is incredibly difficult to learn for foreigners - it doesnt have the same patterns and is full of exceptions. I could see how middle-aged/older persons would see it as a useless exercise to study a language they probably will never get the hang of (ie. sense of futility) | | | |

You can use a straw-man fallacy to suggest that somebody is ignorant, but Rocket is under no obligation to learn anything other than his native language.

Butchering a few words doesn't mean that somebody is trying to learn English. Every Mexican person I have ever known has become fluent at speaking English after a few months of lessons. Cuantas idiomas usted habla?

The only one who has said anything about Rocket being under any obligation is you,all I said was it wouldn't really hurt to learn.
If Rocket wants to he can,I didn't say he HAD to it's his decision and not ours to bash back and forth.

right, what he said was that he seemed like a cool guy, and he could be cool to hang out with if they could communicate...
the way to communicate would be to learn each other's language... that could be taught both ways, and as he made efforts into talking to the guy, and the guy then made efforts talking back, both would come away with a better understanding of each others languange as well as a new friendship...
whether or not the guy should know something shouldn't really be an issue if he seems like somebody you'd like to be friends with... it just depends how worth the effort he seems to be...

Not being fluent at a language generally is a pretty good sign that someone is learning.
Can't really tell what else would tell you.

To some people, I need to learn to Spanish if I want his friendship. What do you all think? I live in the United States, and I want to be friends with my neighbors, but I can't.
Am I discriminating against my neighbors because I refuse to learn spanish?
Na. its just that you can't be bothered. nothing discriminating about that.

you already speak Portuguese it is quite similar to Spanish why not try picking up a Spanish phrase book and seeng where the similarities lie. or if you cant be bothered don't worry about it.
