Only a quarter of the rivers in England and Wales are in good health according to new figures in the environmental agencies annual assessment of waterways.
The assessment showed that almost three quarters failed to make the grade with 117 waterways getting the worst grade possible.

One with a low enough level of pollution to let animals and humans to use it

I was gonna suggest you go to the doctors on first seeing this thread, but i see its about rivers.

Id never go in a river here, you'd end up with dysentry at best.

Is it due to human pollution, or are most natural waterways unsuitable for drinking anyway?

Its not so much to do with drinking (at least this is what i've been taught as part of Kayaking courses). Its more to do with diseases

A lot of it is due to human pollution, i don't know the figures but in my experience i'd say about 60% of the polluted rivers are to do with human activity

You say it needs to be safe for animals and humans to use it. If animals use a waterway, is it safe for humans to use it as well?

Sorry no idea bu i'd be fairly apprehensive about using water than is too polluted to support any wildlife. Although like i said i used waterways for kayaking, which involves a lot more contact with water that barges for example
