And if they're kicking that low don't move away - move in to the attack and use your hands!

Hope you're not fighting competition rules - wkf wouldn't score below the belt with a kick.

well kicks to the inside/outside thigh are frequently used so perhaps its a stylistic difference.

We're also instructed in kicks to the groin although those are not allowed during kumite.

Kicks to the groin are most effective. But yea, not within wkf rules

Must be a style difference, but pretty sure you cant fight under wkf rules if you compete...

Groin is the most effective form of self defense. Renders the attacker useless allowing you to escape. And if you kick him in the groin and he doesn't flinch then you want to be running away anyway! Stamps on the knee are always quite helpful too in that situation.

Trouble is there's a fine line between using reasonable force to subdue your attacker in self defence and ABH/GBH.

Oh ok I got it right then

"In most Kyokushin organizations, hand and elbow strikes to the head or neck are prohibited. However, kicks to the head, knee strikes, punches to the upper body, and kicks to the inner and outer leg are permitted."

link [en.wikipedia.org]

So yup. Stylistic difference.

Can't believe hand and elbow strikes are prohibited!

We couldn't use open handed strikes or elbows in competition fighting, but jisen everything goes and we use plenty in out pairwork

Well, it does say "most" - we are taught knifehand strikes but I'm not sure if they're allowed in competition.

Again, not under world karate federation rules. I should know, I have the rule book - did a referees course earlier in the year

But you might be under another karate federation

We're EKF governed by WKF with their rules. Our association is also recognised by the JKA - so our dan grades are registerd and recognise with all three federations
