Has anyone read Dark Ages America by Morris Berman.
It chronicles how the United States has slipped to low place in vaious health, education and social indicators and how our only superiority right now is our military. And of course this was the condition of every great empire right before it fell.

I try not to get my information from just one source though. A more entertaining indicator of the ignorance of most Americans about our country is the "Jaywalking" segment of the Jay Leno show where he goes out on the street and asks Americans simple questions about our country which most can't answer.
