I'm getting a keyboard to use at Uni but space is an issue. I have read about M-audio keyboards which seem to be the most popular but I have found it hard to find other comnpanies who make Midi keyboards.

I also don't understand the capabilities of midi keyboards, I want to be able to play lots of authentic voices through my keyboard and I also would like to compose on Fl studio and sibelius.

Any other brands who make these keyboards and software pack suggestions would be cool.

Thanks, Adam

Behringer, M-aduio, Akai, Novation, Korg, Edirol, they all make Midi keyboards.

You won't be abile to play any audio using a midi keyboard on its own, as they don't deal with any audio, as they only send out messages, such as what note has been pressed and what octave,

if you have it hooked up to your computer (probably these days it will be USB instead of an actual midi port) you will be abile to trigger sounds using FL studio (i have no idea what sibelius is, so i can't say anything like that)

You can also get hardware sound modules, that connect to the keyboard using a standard midi cable.

Thanks for the brand names. I'm now trying to understand what exactly a synth keyboard is. I understand now what a midi keyboard is and how it works.

Is the below correct?

So basically an electric keyboard can play sounds through its speakers and has built in voices and effects.

A Midi controller can be in different instrument forms and is used to send messages to another music device which then produces the sound like FL studio.

From what I understand a Synth keyboard is the same as a a standard electric keyboard.

I know there are workstations as well but I'll learn what that is later.
