Why don't we ever hear more about this guy? Famous for burning the cakes he was supposed to be watching, Alfred is credited with being the first King of England, defeating the Danes and founding the Royal Navy. He also placed huge importance on learning. Here\'s the reader's digest version but long story short, he rocked. We should be hearing more about him.

Well he sounds pretty good. I read a historical fiction based on his story. It did mention a lot of the bad stuff like when people starved because all the men were at war and couldn't grow food. In fact, one of the main characters lost her children to hunger in the story but accepts that it was out of necessity. He saved a large portion of England from becoming Danish territory, established proper fortified towns and separated the population into "fyrds" so that every man knew what he had to do in case of war, fight or continue with the fields.

Plus, there's no way he could be any worse than his brother, Aethelbald. Aethelbald forced his step-mother to marry him, kept his younger brothers under guard and ruled by force.

alfred was not the great warrier everyone made him out to be. he used people to fight for him and get the land and titles he gave himself.

He did go out and fight. He was forced to spend a winter in an abandoned hunting lodge until springtime when he could raise an army because the Danes attacked in winter, knowing that people in England traditionally fought only in summer. He gathered an army and kicked Guthram's ass.

Who said that I see him as a knight in shining armour? I already admitted that he made mistakes, however he did go some way to rectifying them. That makes him simply human.
