im doing my media project on Advertisng and i am focussing on the portrayal of women and the representations they hold.
i am also exploring whether or not the level of beauty seen in adverts is attainable.

i wold be very grateful if any one could help me explore this subject further, please feel free to leave your views and opinions on my topic

I'm doing a similar project mainly about portrayals of women in the media and how it affects them. What would you like to focus on? Eating disorders? Sexualisation? It would be great if we can discuss. It might also help me with my project as well.

It seems to me that unattainable levels of beauty are the norm in women's advertising. No product will make you look particularly different. My teenaged daughter reads a lot of glossy magazines and buys various cosmetics but we have discussed how she regards the products and how they are sold. She understands that her essential looks may be enhanced but not changed. Anti-ageing products are also spurious. We age, full stop. All these adverts and products play on our insecurity. Youth is portrayed as the most desirable element in life. Sex is used to sell everything from blusher to spark plugs. We should be able to see through all this.

It's not attainable, the question is though why do so many women want to look like that. Belive me as a straight guy I see dozens of women walking down any high st. everyday that I'd wanna go out with.
I think it's playing on womens fears that they might not be as attractive as other women. They might be wanting to look fashionable 'cause they're scared of their friends laughing at them or they might want to feel they're part of something that other women aren't so they can feel like they're more cool and wanna be b****y to less cool women.
The other thing, which is pretty (no pun intended) sensitive territory, is why do women wear make up in general? Is it to make themselves more attractive to men? If so the glamour in adverts is just a magnified version of how women think and feel about how they look and dress in everyday life!
