That's not a good plan either. It's actually one of the worst decisions you can make.

I strongly encourage you not to "look around and buy something today."

I got the whole car analogy Jon. Thanks.
(I had asked if I was being stupid, and you answered).

I use malwarebytes' anti-malware its completely free unless you get this chip that does a scheduled scan but you don't need it because you can just start a manual scan. This pretty much saved my whole computer and i would recommend it to anyone.

I haven't played musical antiviruses in a while, but I know enough to tell you look for one that uses heuristics. This means it can detect threats it doesn't know about yet.

I have my firewall (which alerts me when I log onto a suspected attack site) with Avast! Antivirus, Spybot Search & Destroy, and Malware Bytes Anti-Malware.

Avast detects a virus before it gets to my computer. It has an on-access scanner and the alarm goes off if I go to an infected site. Mine's paid for. It's not too expensive for a year. I like it because I don't have to go out and buy anything at the store. Just download it if your Granddad wants it.

McAfee is also good.

Your firewall being Windows Firewall?
You must have the professional version of avast!.

You know it's ironic for me.....I figured you were going to say Panda Antivirus Pro.

The "best" antivirus protection is a free one that works well and goes easy on system resources.
