I have no idea. I never read that book but I read Fallen Angels which is also about Vietnam. It's hard to decipher his view based on this book (since it is never mentioned) but sparknotes.com might help.

I've had to read that story two or three times for various classes. I really hope I never have to read it again; the first time it's fine, but after that it's really boring to read. I'd say his view on the American dream is that it's an illusion. Through the harsh reality of war, the men are disillusioned about life and what it means to be part of that idealized dream that America has for itself and the rest of the world.
