He never actually shot anyone, just scared a lot of people and yelled "I can't hear you!" at the police when they rteid to give him instructions. Apparently he fired at them and they fired back, killing him.

And what is it with you and guns? You don't necesarily need one to protect yourself and sometimes they make things worse. You're more likely to shoot a family member than a burglar and you're a lot more likely to kill someone. Knives and other potential weapons have other uses and are easier to defend against. Guns were made to kill and make crappy defensive weapons.
