I have a strange problem guys. I'm trying to get tech support on one of our older computers here at work, which is labeled as being of Microtek brand. Checked out Microtek.com, and all it the company handles is imaging-related products, no computers! I googled and googled but found no clues.

Does anyone know anything about this myterious little company?

Ok, this one is quite bizarre.

It's an old computer that we're moving to a different room to serve a different function, so I've been trying to reinstall W2k on it. I can't! During installation, it tells me at various points that certain files can't be copied from the cd, and of course those are critical .dll and .exe files for the OS that it's failing to copy. You'd think simple troubleshooting would fix this, but noooo. Get a load of this:

1) I figured the CD was damaged. Tried it on another computer. No problems. Tried a different CD on this computer. Same problems.

2) Thought the hard drive could have developed some bad blocks. Tried three different hard drives. Same problem.

3) Maybe the CD drive wasn't reading correctly? Two different CD drives. Same problem.

4) Reformatted and repartitioned the hard drive.

5) Tried both OS repair and clean installation.

6) Made various funny noises at it.

So, there ya go, welcome to the Twilight Zone.

Ok... first since it sounds posessed I'd try holy water..... Then look at the BIOS screen and find out who made the BIOS, get the numbers and take a peek inside... Find out what chipset it has... Then google for the motherboard manuf. and look for a bios update.... it's either that or your IDE channel has acquired physical defects....... Oh and this is a duh... but make sure you try different IDE cables...... Oh and make sure you blow all the dust out! I have had manical things happen from dust!! Was this computer working lately?
